In a world that often feels increasingly disconnected, the power of touch remains an anchor to the essence of human connection and healing. Growing up, touch was as much a part of life as the air we breathed. It was woven into the fabric of our daily interactions—a soothing balm for both body and soul. I remember when babies were tenderly wrapped in blankets, carried close in the protective arms of those who loved them. If they cried, they were held, gently patted on their backs until their restlessness dissolved into sleep. At church, I was passed into the welcoming arms of an elder—a mother of the church—whose rhythmic rocking kept time with the songs of faith. There was healing in touch, whether it was my mother rubbing liniment on me after a tumble down the stairs, or my father’s gentle hand drawing circles on my back to banish nighttime fears. Holding hands while crossing the street was more than safety—it was a gesture of care and assurance. Even the simple touch in childhood games, from tag to hand jives, carried an innocence and joy that tethered us to each other. But as the years have passed, I’ve noticed a troubling shift. The warm, affirming power of touch seems to have diminished. In its place are screens—personal devices in personal spaces. We connect through pixels instead of palms, and the human connections that once soothed and strengthened us feel more fleeting and less frequent.

All is not Lost

I reflect on the quiet isolation that creeps into life as a senior. Conversations feel hurried; gatherings feel sparse. Time, once generously shared, now feels rationed. Even activities once communal—exercise, meals, games—have become solitary endeavors. In the rush of modern living, the simple, profound act of touch has been sidelined. Yet, I believe it is not lost.

Be Intentional in Restoring Touch

We can reclaim the healing power of touch, beginning with small, intentional acts. A hand on a shoulder, a firm handshake, a warm hug—these gestures connect us, grounding us in the presence and care of others. Touch is a language of its own, one that speaks even when words cannot. When sadness envelops me, touch reminds me I am not alone. When anxiety stirs within, it calms the storm. When joy fills my heart, it amplifies the moment. Touch is healing. It soothes, encourages, and strengthens. We hold within us an innate power—a gift at our very fingertips. Let us use it. Let us reconnect with our humanity through the simple, tender, intentional act of touch. In doing so, we will find that the healing we offer others will reflect back into our own lives.

Take a moment today to reach out—literally. There is healing in your hands.
