Recently, I completed a project that had an immense impact on how I look at the past my family to inspire a hopeful and meaningful future. I published a book entitled, "My Dearest Minnie." This is a love story based on letters written during the Great Migration. In 1922, my grandfather, Rev. Caleb Richardson left Orangeburg County, South Carolina. He migrated to Philadelphia, PA to escape the Jim Crow south and begin a new life for himself and his family. My grandmother, Minnie Esther Walker Richardson, joined him three months later with their five children. This story depicts the strengths and challenges that ordinary African American families faced in forging a new life in a new setting. Reading the letters written by my grandparents in 1922 allowed me to glimpse into their lives and weave a story that celebrates their courage. Despite adversities, they triumphed. Knowing who my ancestors were and what they accomplished infuses me with the desire to help other families explore their past and march forward into an encouraging future.
